Why study MBBS in China

China is one of the oldest civilizations in the world having a written history of more than 5,000 years, rich culture and a respected educational tradition. That tradition continues to this day, especially in the field of medicine: China is now one of the fastest-growing destinations for international students studying medicine in the world.


In recent years, a lot of students from different parts of the world are also opting for China for medical education. Last year, more than 10,000 students came to China to study medicine, most of them selecting an English-medium MBBS program. 

There are multiple reasons for the growth of the increase in the inflow of medical students to China. 


Globally recognized and eligible for any medical licensing examination 

The 52 MCI approved medical schools are public universities under the supervision of the Chinese Government and have been approved to enroll international students. They have also listed in the World Health Organization (WHO)'s "Directory of World Medical Schools". It implies that the graduates are eligible to attend national medical screening tests such as USMLE, PLAB, AMC, MCI, PMDC, HPCSA, SCHS, etc.


Equivalent to western higher education in medicine.

Most of China's medical universities are ranked among the top 500 universities in the world and highly reputed for being at the forefront of the field of modern medicine. Moreover, English-medium MBBS programs have been taught for years, and there are now lots of graduates pursuing further education in China or being a doctor in their own country.


Low living costs and tuition fee

Studying towards an MBBS in China is 70% cheaper than undertaking a similar program in the US or UK. The charges of tutoring in the universities in China are subsidized by the Ministry of Public Health of the Chinese Government. And also, China has great education infrastructure in their institutions.

Fast-track qualification

Most universities in China offer their medical degrees as a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). The MBBS program is a fast-track process to become a doctor. It lasts five years, which means you can become a certified physician way faster than those studying medicine in the US, Canada or Germany, where it takes seven to eight years to completely become a doctor.

You’re probably picturing a university in Beijing or Shanghai, with all those skyscrapers and busy roads, but there’s so much more to the country, and it’s all well-connected.


MBBS in China Eligibility Criteria 

In most cases, the academic year begins from the month of September or October. Eligibility to join a medicine degree in China is very simple and straightforward. MBBS in China for Indian students’ eligibility also remains the same. However, the minimum aggregate marks that qualify for application vary with few universities.

  • Eligibility criteria for MBBS applicants are passing in the higher school education in the 10+2 pattern. The minimum score is 50 % in aggregate in the major subjects as Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

  • The applicant should be a non-china nationality and abide by the laws (in the international quota)

  • Age shall be minimum 17 years and maximum shall be 26 years

  • Candidate must be NEET-UG Qualified.

  • Students must provide all the certificates to authenticate their qualifications when they send an application for admission. It includes mark sheets, school leaving certificate, etc.

There are a few highly reputed universities in China that require about 75% marks scored in the higher secondary examination. Candidates are shortlisted based on the marks and early receipt of the application.

Marks required for MBBS in China is average. There is no need to score a high percentage in the school examination to get admission.

Submission of Additional Documents

All applicants must submit academic documents. It includes

  • Mark sheets of class 10

  • Mark sheets of class 12

  • School transfer certificate

  • Conduct certificate and

  • School leaving certificate.

In addition, the other necessary documents like passport copies, application forms, etc.

In addition, there are few additional documents that the applicant should send to process the admission. It includes NO Criminal Record certificate and Medical Checkup Certificates. It is mandated by the China MBBS Education Institution

These two documents were mandatory for Indian students to submit when they apply for a 30-day student visa in the Chinese Embassy. However, these documents are mandatory now to be attached along with the application forms when you apply for to study MBBS in China, to any Medical University in China.

China Student Visa (X) Application Process

Chinese student visa, also known as the X visa, is issued to aliens who come to China for study, advanced studies, or fieldwork. It can be divided into two types:

X1 visa: For long-term study > 180 days

X2 visa: For short-term study ≤ 180 days

The validity of both is 90 days from the date of issue, while the stay duration for X1 visa is usually 000, which needs to be determined after the applicant enters China, and that for X2 visa is not more than 180 days.


For international students, it’s necessary to find an organization accredited for offering courses or internships to foreigners so that they will send a JW201 or JW202 form and an admission letter.

China Student Visa Requirements & Documents

1. Passport - Applicant's original passport valid up to at least six months with at least one blank page.

2. Application Form - One accurately and truthfully completed China Student Visa Application Form.

3. Recent Photo - Affix one recent passport-style color photo with a full face, front view, no hat, and against a plain light background onto the application form.

4. Admission Notice - Original and a copy of Admission Notice from the Chinese university or school.

5. JW201 or JW202 Form - for X1 application only - Original and a copy of approved Foreign Student Visa Application Form JW201 or JW202.

How to Apply for China X visa

1. You may submit the application to the consular office of the Chinese embassies, consulates, or China Visa Application Centers (CVASC) in person.

2. Or you can entrust someone else (e.g. friends, relatives), a travel agency or a visa agency to act on your behalf if you can't come personally. Power of attorney is not required.

3. Mailed applications are refused by most Chinese embassies or consulates, but acceptable in many CVASCs.

4. An appointment is not required by most embassies and consulates. But if you are required to submit the application to CVASC, you may need to make an online appointment via CVASC's website.

Processing Time

The regular processing time is 4 working days. If you want to collect your visa earlier, the express service and rush service are available.

Express Service: 2-3 working days processing; extra US$ 20 will be charged.

Rush Service: 1 working day processing; extra US$ 30 will be charged.

Things to Know for X1 Visa Holders

X1 visa holders shall apply for a Temporary Residence Permit from the local Exit and Entry Administration within 30 days upon entry into China. The temporary residence permit can be issued with the validity of up to 5 years. Documents required include passport, admission notice, JW201 or JW202 form, Foreigner Physical Examination Record, a registration of accommodation, and a passport-style white-background photo.


Within the validity of the Temporary Residence Permit, students can travel into and out of mainland China freely.

When the study in China ends, X1 visa holders should go to the local Exit and Entry Administration to cancel the Temporary Residence Permit and apply for a 30-day tourist visa with zero entry to avoid problems.

Things to Know for X2 Visa Holders

X2 holders shall stay in China within the duration period as indicated on the visa, and it is not necessary for them to apply for the temporary residence permit. In case they need to extend the X2 visa, please go to the local Exit and Entry Administration to handle this affair 30 days before the expiration date.

Working on X Visa Is Not Allowed

You are not permitted to work on the X type visa. But part-time work and internships off-campus may be authorized. You should contact your university after you have settled in China to see what can be arranged.

For foreign students who work in violation of Chinese regulations or beyond the prescribed scope of jobs or time limit, they shall be deemed unlawful employment and will probably have to stop or be expelled.
