Student Visa Requirements Australia

There are different types of visas you have based on the duration and program you choose to pursue. For short term program within 12 weeks, you can apply for a tourist vis, with a Working Holiday visa, you can stay and study up to 16 weeks. But if you apply for a university program you probably need to apply for a subclass 500 visa.

I will depict the step by step general process below.

1. Apply to a University or college in Australia and get an offer.

The first step to obtaining a student visa is to apply for a program in a college or university and get an offer. For that, you need to choose a course first and a university secondly. Once you receive the offer from the institution, you need to file back an offer acceptance letter along with the tuition deposit. Then the corresponding college will send the Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). This the predominant document you need to start the visa process. Our E. Counselor will assist you with the process.

2. Create an account on the Australian immigration authorities website.

Normally the Australian visa applications are happening online. To begin the visa application process, you first need to create an account on the Australian Govt Department of Home Affairs website.

3. Required Documentation for the Student visa Application in Australia.

You will need the following documents to apply for a student visa:

  1. Your CoE

  2. Health insurance

  3. A Valid Passport

  4. Proof of temporary stay: Evidence to show that you meet the Genuine Temporary Entrant requirement for a student visa. This must include a statement in your application form that you intend to stay in Australia temporarily and/or documentation to support claims. The statement must be written by the applicant even if using an agent.

Depending on where you apply from and where you will study additional documents will be needed. Some common documents you might need are:

  • Additional id documents such as a birth certificate

  • Fund proof, such as a bank statement

  • Proof that you have enough knowledge to pass your intended studies, such as certified grade reports and IELTS-test result.

  • Proof of previous employment such as an employment contract, paychecks, etc.

  • Documentation of criminal offenses if you have ever been convicted.

All documents should be uploaded in a digital format. All documents should be translated into English by a certified translator.

English language requirements

To gain your Australia student visa, it is mandatory to provide evidence of proficiency in the English language. This usually means passing a secure English language test to be able to prove your communication and correspondence skills.

4. Complete the visa application online

You should apply for a student visa subclass 500. You should submit your application no later than six weeks before your course starts, and no earlier than 12 weeks. For more details (https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/help-support/applying-online-or-on-paper/online

You can always save your application and continue it later from where you left it.

5. Get a TRN-number paying Visa fee

Once you have completed the application process, you need to pay the visa fee using a credit or debit card and obtain the TRN number.

Read more about the payment here: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/help-support/applying-online-or-on-paper/online/how-to-pay

When the application and payment are done you will get a receipt with a TRN-number (Transaction Reference Number). You will need the TRN number for future correspondence.

6. Possible health checkup and interview

Depending on where you will study and where you live you might also need to do a health checkup and/or a visa interview. You will receive this information about this when you complete the application above if it applies to you.

Don’t do the health checkup before you have completed the application as you will need your TRN-number and you will get instructions on what you need to check. On this page, you can find doctors in your country that are approved by the Australian Immigrations to do this checkup.

7. Get your visa decision

How long it takes to get an Australian Student Visa Approval? Normally it takes from a week to a couple of weeks once your application is completed. You can check the status of your application by logging in to the immigration website (with the account you already created) and if needed enter your TNR-number. Log in at https://online.immi.gov.au/lusc/login

Normally the Australian authorities will notify you by e-mail once your visa decision is ready. Your visa is electronic so if you want physical proof of you can print the grant letter that you receive online once your visa is approved.

8. Now get on board.

Once you have received your visa you can enter Australia 90 days before the course start date printed on your CoE. If you have not booked accommodation through your school you should inform them of your address in Australia within 7 days of arriving there.
