What is a college or university ranking?
College and university rankings are rankings of institutions in higher education that have been ranked on the basis of various factors and combinations of various parameters. None of the rankings give a comprehensive overview of the strengths and weaknesses of the institutions ranked by them because all select a range of easily quantifiable characteristics to base their results on. Rankings have been conducted by magazines, newspapers, websites, governments, or academics most often. In addition to ranking entire institutions, organizations perform rankings of specific programs, award numbers, departments, and schools. Various rankings consider combinations of measures of funding and endowment, research excellence and/or influence, specialization expertise, student options, admissions, internationalization, placements, industrial associations, historical reputation, etc. Some rankings evaluate institutions worldwide, while others assess institutions within a single country. There are lots of international and national ranking agencies and organizations.
When it comes to global university ranking, the leader in Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as Shanghai Ranking followed by QS World University Rankings.
But here we are going to have a look at what is happening in India. In India, there are lots of university and college ranking agencies. But in the public sector, we have The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) which is initiated by the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India, to rank all institutions of higher education in India. And in the private sector, there are Magazines such as Youth Incorporated, India Today, Outlook, Mint, The Week, Dataquest, Careers360 and Electronics for You conduct annual rankings for the major disciplines. Apart from this, there are other small-time agencies as well.

The predominant place to find the ranking of a university is NIRF (The National Institutional Ranking Framework).
